What the Essay Said

Kristyna Zapletal published this list on July 1, 2015, and it became the most widely shared piece MAQTOOB ever ran. The premise was simple: forget overpriced schools and crowded classrooms, because the internet already teaches almost anything for free. The list gathered 37 sites in groups, from full online course platforms such as edX, Coursera, Udemy, and Skillshare, to coding schools such as Codecademy, freeCodeCamp, Udacity, and CodeCombat, plus language, music, and creative skill resources.

By the author’s own account the post recorded more than 32,000 recommends on Medium, trended there for weeks, and was republished and translated by magazines around the world. Years later, freeCodeCamp’s founder Quincy Larson and many productivity writers were still pointing readers to it.
