IRS Direct File

Suspended IRS filing service; not available for the 2026 filing season

Updated August 12, 2026

IRS Direct File Overview

IRS Direct File was a government-run web service that guided eligible taxpayers through a federal individual return in English or Spanish. It could import selected IRS account data, collect tax information step by step, provide live chat, and hand eligible users to a participating state filing tool.

The service covered only selected states and tax situations and did not replace a full commercial tax suite or professional preparer. It is not open for the 2026 filing season, so its workflow is now historical rather than an option taxpayers can start today.

Key Features

  • Former direct federal filing: Let eligible taxpayers prepare and send a federal individual return through an IRS-run website.
  • Former guided interview: Collected supported income, deduction, credit, payment, and refund information step by step.
  • Selected IRS data import: Offered some users data already held in their IRS account.
  • Former state handoff: Sent eligible users in participating states to a supported state filing tool after the federal return.
  • Current status: The program ended before the 2026 filing season and the official product domain is offline.

Pros

Compared with Why this product may fit better
IRS Free File Direct File kept an eligible federal return inside an IRS-run interview instead of sending the user to an IRS Free File commercial partner. That meant fewer account handoffs and no paid upgrade inside the narrow set of supported tax situations.
Cash App Taxes Direct File used IRS authentication and had no software charge when it was operating. Cash App Taxes is also free for supported returns, but it requires a commercial account rather than keeping the federal filing inside an IRS service.
FreeTaxUSA Government surveys reported high satisfaction among eligible Direct File users, and the IRS service could pass people to participating state tools. FreeTaxUSA uses a commercial account instead, so Direct File offered a more direct government path while it was operating.

Cons

Compared with Where this product may fall short
IRS Free File Direct File is unavailable in 2026, while the IRS Free File partner program remains an active filing route. Historical price and satisfaction evidence cannot make it usable now. Taxpayers need an active route such as IRS Free File or another current filing provider.
Cash App Taxes Even while it was open, Direct File supported fewer income types, forms, deductions, and states than Cash App Taxes. Filers with self-employment, many investments, itemized deductions, or an unsupported state had to use another service.
FreeTaxUSA FreeTaxUSA is active and supports many self-employment, investment, rental, K-1, and itemized-deduction returns. Direct File was narrower even before it closed, so people with those needs had to use a wider product while the IRS service was operating.
H&R Block H&R Block retains professional preparation and office routes, while the former Direct File service had no preparer handoff for returns outside its narrow eligibility rules and is unavailable in 2026. A user who reached a scope boundary had to find another filing route rather than converting the existing work into a professional engagement.

Reviews

  • 💬GAO Direct File pilot review (140,803 accepted returns in the 2024 pilot, no user star score): GAO found that the pilot followed leading development practices and used an interview-style filing flow. More than 90% of users offered IRS data import chose it. GAO also found limited state access and said the IRS could improve performance measurement and plans for wider access.
  • Reddit Direct File experience thread (one 2025 filing report plus scope replies): One filer with W-2 and 1099-INT/G income said the federal return took about 45 minutes, comparing joint and separate filing was easy, and the New York state handoff worked. Other replies say multi-state returns and 1099-NEC income were not supported. These reports describe the former service, not a route available in 2026.
