ProTaxPro

Browser-based professional tax preparation for solo offices and service bureaus

Updated August 12, 2026

ProTaxPro Overview

ProTaxPro is browser-based professional tax software for solo preparers, tax offices, and service bureaus. It supports individual returns and can add entity and information-return work for practices that prepare business filings or W-2 and 1099 forms.

Preparers can use interview-based entry, e-file and print returns, bill clients, collect remote signatures, upload documents, and connect bank-product services. The software runs in the browser with live updates, but return units are tied to a tax year and the published entity set centers on Forms 1065, 1120, and 1120-S.

Key Features

  • Cloud preparation: ProTaxPro runs in a browser and receives updates without seasonal desktop downloads.
  • Interview-based entry: The vendor highlights guided entry for preparers who prefer an interview workflow.
  • Flexible return capacity: Monthly, unit-based, unlimited 1040, information-return, and developer routes serve different office volumes.
  • Office staffing: Current packages allow up to 15 employees per office without an added employee charge.
  • Practice workflow: Billing, remote signatures, document upload, education, and bank-product integrations support a professional office.

Pros

Compared with Why this product may fit better
Drake Tax ProTaxPro’s $179 package lowers the initial commitment for a new or part-time practice. Drake Tax can be economical at higher volume, but ProTaxPro lets a firm preserve cash while it learns its real federal, state, and entity mix before buying a larger unlimited license.
TaxSlayer Pro ProTaxPro offers monthly, unit-based, and unlimited choices, including $689 and $899 annual options. A practice with uneven seasonal volume has more ways to match spending to workload than it does with TaxSlayer Pro’s annual editions.
ProConnect ProTaxPro’s unlimited 1040 plan avoids ProConnect’s per-return list pricing. That can save money as individual-return volume grows, although the firm should still compare browser collaboration, business-return needs, extra units, and the way each product charges for state work.

Cons

Compared with Where this product may fall short
Drake Tax Drake Tax’s pay-per-return price is tied to a complete individual or business return. ProTaxPro consumes separate units for federal, state, extension, and amendment filings, so a 20-unit package can cover far fewer than 20 complete client returns.
TaxSlayer Pro ProTaxPro’s $149 monthly headline does not show every included return, user, or contract term. TaxSlayer Pro publishes clearer annual editions, so a ProTaxPro buyer should get the filing allowance, commitment, renewal price, support, and conversion work in writing.
ProConnect ProConnect has a much larger product and integration network than ProTaxPro. ProTaxPro’s small Trustpilot sample cannot show long-term reliability, so firms should test calculations, state modules, conversion, connections, and support under realistic conditions.
MyTaxPrepOffice ProTaxPro charges separately for entity returns, W-2 and 1099 work, added units, and some bank-product transmission. MyTAXPrepOffice may offer a clearer all-season package for a firm with several service lines, so compare a representative season rather than the lowest ProTaxPro number.

Reviews

  • Trustpilot ProTaxPro reviews (4.0/5 from 9 reviews): A June 2026 user says the software is easy and support solves problems quickly. A 2025 reviewer reports missing confirmation for W-2 and 1099 transmissions and poor follow-up, while a 2023 reviewer says the exported client CSV did not contain tax data. Nine reviews are a very small sample.
  • Reddit tax-professional discussion (no aggregate rating): The original poster names ProTaxPro and reports a PTIN and EFIN registration white screen before using it. A later commenter who used ProTaxPro for one season calls it inexpensive but not user-friendly and says an installment agreement could not be filed through the product, so the request had to be mailed.
