Foxit Free PDF Reader

Fast, lightweight PDF reader with annotation and accessibility tools

Updated August 11, 2026

Foxit Free PDF Reader Overview

Foxit PDF Reader is a cross-platform PDF app for opening documents, adding comments and highlights, filling forms, and working with signatures. It is available on desktop and mobile devices.

The app suits everyday reading, review, and document exchange. More advanced PDF creation, editing, e-signature management, and document workflows belong to other Foxit products, so they should not be assumed to be part of Reader.

Pros

Compared with Why this product may fit better
Adobe Acrobat Reader Foxit PDF Reader puts a broad set of annotation and form tools into a lighter-feeling desktop app. Adobe Acrobat Reader remains familiar, but Foxit is appealing when speed and toolbar control matter.
SumatraPDF Form filling, signatures and shared review give Foxit PDF Reader more ways to return a changed document. SumatraPDF opens files very quickly, but it offers far less after reading.
PDF-XChange Editor A mixed-device team can use Foxit PDF Reader across major desktop and mobile platforms. PDF-XChange Editor is strong on Windows, but it cannot provide that same basic reader everywhere.
Nitro PDF Reader Across desktop and mobile platforms, Foxit PDF Reader provides a mature free annotation workflow. Nitro PDF Reader is more closely tied to its Windows PDF suite.

Cons

Compared with Where this product may fall short
Adobe Acrobat Reader Adobe Acrobat Reader is still the safest compatibility choice for organizations built around Acrobat forms and Adobe services. Foxit may add another support path without removing that Adobe dependency.
SumatraPDF SumatraPDF is much smaller and has fewer prompts around paid PDF products. Foxit PDF Reader is busier and uses more resources when the only job is to read a document.
PDF-XChange Editor PDF-XChange Editor exposes more editing tools in its Windows application, including features that go beyond a reader. Foxit keeps advanced editing in paid products, so a Windows power user may reach that boundary sooner.
Nitro PDF Reader Nitro PDF Reader offers a familiar Office-style interface and a direct path into its paid PDF editing suite. Foxit's wider toolset can feel crowded to a Windows user who prefers that layout.

Reviews

  • 💬Being Paperless review: The Mac review liked the customizable toolbar, full-screen reading and range of highlight or underline tools. It found the icons dated and noted limits such as rotating the whole document instead of a single page.
  • 💬Apple App Store reviews: Foxit's broader mobile PDF Editor app is rated 4.46/5 from about 4,759 ratings. One long-term user liked keeping several PDFs open in tabs, but reported that an update stopped recognizing the subscription and that reinstalling fixed access while deleting locally imported files. This is mobile Editor feedback, not a rating of the free desktop Reader alone.
