- Core HR: Employee profiles, documents, eSignatures, reporting and workflow automation.
- Time and payroll preparation: Time tracking, absence management, salary data and preliminary payroll use the same employee records.
- CorePro: Adds position management, broader legal-entity support, advanced permissions, API access and workforce planning.
- Optional apps: Recruiting, surveys, performance, compensation and whistleblowing are added separately.
- Payroll boundary: Personio Payroll and payroll integrations are separate options rather than universal Core HR features.
Personio
European Core HR platform with optional talent and payroll products.
Updated August 11, 2026
Personio Overview
Personio is an HR platform for growing organizations across Europe. Core HR keeps employee records, documents, onboarding, time, absence, approvals and reporting in one place, so employees and managers can complete routine work without passing spreadsheets around.
Companies can add recruiting, performance, compensation, surveys and other apps as their needs grow. Payroll preparation uses the same employee data, while Personio Payroll and outside payroll connections are separate options. This keeps the core people system distinct from the extra talent and payroll products.

Pros
| Competitor | Where this tool may fit better |
|---|---|
| Workday | For a team weighing Workday, Personio offers a narrower HR platform aimed at growing European organizations. It can be easier to shape around Core HR and selected talent apps when the project does not require Workday’s much larger enterprise transformation scope. |
| BambooHR | BambooHR is often considered for core HR, while Personio lets a European buyer add recruiting, surveys, performance and compensation around the same employee records. Personio can fit better when those optional apps and local European workflows are part of the brief. |
| HiBob | HiBob and Personio both cover broad people operations. Personio may suit a buyer that wants Core HR, time, payroll preparation and optional talent apps organized around a European operating model. |
| Factorial | A buyer also looking at Factorial may prefer Personio when advanced permissions, multi-entity controls, API access and workforce planning are important. Those controls sit in CorePro and can support a more complex rollout. |
Cons
| Competitor | Where the rival may have the edge |
|---|---|
| Workday | Workday has a stronger case for the largest multinational HR and finance programs. Personio remains centered on HR, and its payroll options vary by market, so a complex global rollout needs a careful country-by-country check. |
| BambooHR | BambooHR may be easier to assess when a team needs a smaller core HR setup. Personio now publishes a €7.60 starting point, but the final cost still changes with Core or CorePro, employee count and optional apps. |
| HiBob | A Reddit buyer liked Personio’s HRIS and ATS but chose not to use it for a rollout spanning Europe, North America and Pakistan. HiBob deserves a closer look when the required payroll and compliance coverage extends well beyond Personio’s European focus. |
| Factorial | Factorial may suit a very small team that values a compact starting setup. Personio’s plan choice, optional apps and tailored demo can create more buying and configuration work than that team needs. |
Reviews
- Personio reviews on Trustpilot (4.0/5 from 309 reviews): Recent reviewers praise broad employee-lifecycle coverage, regular product improvements and responsive support. Other recent reviews report payroll-migration errors in tax documents, slow resolution and API stability concerns.
- Reddit: Personio in an international shortlist: The buyer liked Personio’s HRIS and built-in ATS but rejected it for a Canada, United States, United Kingdom and Pakistan rollout because its payroll and compliance fit was too Europe-focused.
The sources point to two checks before buying: test the exact country and payroll setup, and assign clear ownership for migration data and support escalation.
